The Canberra Southern Cross Club together with CHC Australia will be building 70 new affordable rental homes in Phillip.

The homes will be built as part of a new 140-unit build-to-rent development under the ACT government’s $60 million Affordable Housing Project Fund, which was established last year to grow the supply of affordable rental properties in Canberra.

Built-to-rent homes are designed to provide affordable housing for long-term renters.

The homes will be located on land owned by the club, adjacent to its Stellar Canberra health and wellness centre.

Canberra Southern Cross Club acting CEO Joel Lieschke told Club Management the decision to get behind an initiative such as this one was part of its long-term diversification strategy.

“In 2022 the Canberra Southern Cross Club celebrated its Golden Anniversary.  This project is a key part of our diversification strategy that will help ensure a sustainable and viable Canberra Southern Cross Club for the next 50 years,” he said.

“It will also assist our local community by easing the dire need for affordable rental accommodation in Canberra.”

Lieschke added that partnering with CHC, the largest provider of affordable social housing in Canberra, will “ensure the success of the venture”. It is Canberra Southern Cross Club’s first foray into this space.

“CHC will provide the expertise through the design, build and letting,” he said.

Construction will begin this year and is expected to be completed by 2026.
