The NSWRL celebrates its inaugural Licensed Club Round to recognise the vital support that is provided to the game by all clubs every season, including more than $40 million in funding alone last year. Fans were encouraged to call in and visit their local club on the weekend to say thanks for all the tireless assistance they provide to sporting teams and the community with their contributions also including building grandstands, upgrading playing surfaces and supplying thousands of playing kits.
“The game of Rugby League would struggle to survive without the support of our Licensed Clubs so it’s important to acknowledge the contribution they have made over a long period of time,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.
“There is nothing better than heading back to your local club to celebrate a memorable victory or commiserate a hard-fought loss with all your teammates and supporters; and I encourage all players, coaches, officials, volunteers and families to show their support this weekend.”
The contribution made by Licensed Clubs has also been captured in a video narrated by True Blue Anthony Minichiello, who won two premierships with the Sydney Roosters and represented the NSW Blues on 11 occasions.
Leagues Clubs Australia Chief Executive Don Hammond said the support from clubs across NSW for Rugby League teams ranging from grassroots to the top end was significant.
“The charter of Licenced Clubs across NSW is to give back to the community in many varied ways,” Don Hammond said.
“Rugby League from Grassroots to the NRL is very heavily supported by clubs of all different persuasions from Rugby League to RSL’s to your local Bowling Club.
“Clubs across NSW funded over $40 million in support during the 2021 season, even though they were closed for the best part of three months due to COVID-19. They also supply kit for players, maintain grounds and build infrastructure to ensure the game of Rugby League prospers.
“Licenced Clubs Round is our way of thanking clubs, big and small, across NSW for the ongoing support of the game we all love. Thanks to the team at NSWRL for making this happen and please support your local club when you can.”
