Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) chairman John Kanga announced his shock resignation, effective immediately, on the eve of the Caulfield Cup Carnival.
In a statement released on Friday, Kanga said his decision followed “a series of public attacks” personally directed at him.
“While I completely reject the nature and accuracy of those attacks, I do not want them to distract from the Club, its members, or the excitement of the Caulfield Cup Carnival,” he said.
“My decision to step aside is about putting the interests of the club and the broader racing industry ahead of my own. The MRC is bigger than any one individual, and I want to ensure the focus remains where it belongs – on racing, our members, staff, and delivering a world-class Spring Carnival.”
The club has since appointed vice chairman Cameron Fisher as the Kanga’s replacement.
“John’s decision to step aside reflects his deep respect for the Club and its members. We thank him for his service and wish him all the very best for the future,” acting CEO Tanya Fullarton said.
“The Committee’s appointment of Cameron Fisher as Chairman ensures strong leadership and continuity as we head into the Caulfield Cup Carnival.”
The resignation comes as the club marks 150 years since the formation of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club (VATC), established on 13 October 1875 at Craig’s Hotel, Ballarat.
“For 150 years, the MRC has been at the heart of Australian racing – first as the Victoria Amateur Turf Club and today as a leader in delivering world-class racing, hospitality and community experiences. This milestone allows us to honour the vision and determination of our founders, while reaffirming our commitment to shaping the future of racing for the next generation,” Fisher said.
The 150th commemorations will continue to be celebrated throughout the 2026/27 racing season, commencing on 1 August 2026 with details on celebrations and events to come.
