Country Club Tasmania has announced that its new 18-hole golf course will be named Championship Golf Course.
Currently undergoing a $20 million transformation, the course is set to open in summer 2026. The layout of the new course, designed by architect Robin Gibson, is inspired by iconic golf course layouts in North American and the UK. It will incorporate century-old trees, stone bridges, creeks, and lakes, creating a visually stunning and technically challenging experience.
“Robin Gibson has created something truly special. This isn’t just a beautiful course; it’s a thinking golfer’s course,” Country Club Tasmania head of golf Bryce Gorhma said.
“Every hole asks a question, every shot demands a decision. It’s tough, yes, but fair, and it’s the kind of layout that keeps you coming back, trying to master it. That’s what great golf is all about.”
According to the club, the newly named Championship Golf Course pays tribute to Country Club Tasmania’s legacy. First opened in 1982, the original course was crafted by Australian golf legend Peter Thomson and architect Michael Wolveridge, blending links and parkland styles with strategic water hazards and expansive greens.
Cricket legend and Launceston local Ricky Ponting has also been named as the newly appointed ambassador of Country Club Tasmania.
“Growing up in Launceston, Country Club was always part of the local landscape, a place where sport, community, and good times came together. To now be part of its next chapter as ambassador for the new Championship Golf Course is a real honour,” Ponting said.
“This course isn’t just world-class, it’s Tasmanian through and through. I can’t wait to see golfers from all over experience what we’ve built here.”
The opening of the course will follow Country Club Tasmania’s recently launched entertainment precinct, The Range, which features a 28-bay driving range, 18-hole mini golf course, and a new clubhouse and bar.
