Following years of extensive delays, Sharks Leagues Club has announced that construction of its new home is finally set to move forward, after reaching an agreement with developer, Novm, and Capital Corporation.
Originally scheduled to be completed by February 2022, the new home of the Cronulla Sharks has been under construction since the end of 2019 when the doors to the original clubhouse closed.
The new facility will be built on the site of its former home, adjacent to the Sharks stadium in Woolooware in Sydney’s south. It will form part of the Woolooware Bay Town Centre, comprising retail, residential, hotel, multi-storey car park, and the Leagues Club.
However, the club could not begin construction and fitout until Novm returned the ownership of the site back to the club.
“This has been a long and complex journey, but today marks a defining moment,” Sharks Chairman Steve Mace said.
“It’s no secret this project has faced almost every challenge imaginable, from COVID disruptions, to cost escalations. However, what has mattered most is how we’ve responded, with grit, unity, and an unwavering focus on the end goal.
“We acknowledge the role Novm and Capital Corporation have played in helping reach this point that benefits all parties; most importantly, the Sharks and our members.”
The club has partnered with Xenia Construction to help develop the new club, which is projected to take around 12-15 months, with the club pencilling in an opening date of mid-to-late 2026.
“Once Xenia get their feet on the ground and begin the Club construction we will have a better understanding of the exact project timeline, however ideally we will be able to open the doors for trade somewhere towards the backend of the 2026 NRL season,” CEO Dino Mezzatesta said.
Since the closure of the original club premises, members have been calling Sharks at Kareela their home. It was the result of the amalgamation of Sharks Leagues Club and Kareela Golf Club.
