Community clubs across Queensland have received more than $250,000 to help get them back up and running following the devastating floods earlier this year. The financial assistance was made possible by the establishment of a relief fund, announced in March by the National Rugby League, to support the many clubs affected by the floods.
The initiative followed discussions between leaders from Queensland Rugby League and the Brisbane Broncos about the best way to help rebuild those community clubs.
“Through the various pictures and news reports, we all saw how devastating the floods were for many, including community rugby league clubs across southeast Queensland and northern NSW,” QRL chief executive officer Rohan Sawyer said.
As of early September, the QRL and other fund partners – including Gold Coast Titans and NSW Rugby League – have approved the distribution of $255,000 to community clubs in Queensland, as well as the Brisbane Rugby League Referees’ Association.
“While the fund is not designed to fully compensate the loss and damage sustained by some clubs, it will go a small way to supporting them through the 2022 season and helping our many incredible volunteers prepare for next year,” Sawyer said.
The QRL is also soon to release its State Infrastructure Strategy that includes future-proofing rugby league facilities and further supporting clubs.
