Clubs SA and Australian Hotels Association, South Australia (AHA SA) have renewed their partnership with Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation for another two years, after securing $200,000 in funding from the Independent Gaming Corporation (IGC).
Representing more than 700 clubs and hotel venues, Clubs SA and AHA SA have worked alongside Breakthrough since 2024 and 2023, respectively, to improve mental health support in the hospitality sector. Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation is a for-purpose organisation dedicated to funding research into mental health.
Clubs SA CEO Peter Apostolopoulos said mental health initiatives are essential for club members, staff, and patrons.
“Clubs SA is committed to supporting the mental well-being of club members, staff and patrons across the state. Our clubs are the heart of their communities, making mental health initiatives a vital focus,” he said.
“By equipping clubs with the right resources and knowledge, we can create environments where people feel supported and connected.”
Representing the hotel sector, AHA SA CEO Anna Moeller said: “It’s great to see the mental health space taken seriously. In our industry, staff are working in challenging customer-facing roles. We are thrilled that the IGC have acknowledged the need for dedicated support and research in this area.”
Under the extended partnership, Breakthrough said it will roll out targeted mental health strategies to provide the hospitality sector with practical tools and education. This will include mental health first-aid workshops and wellbeing programs across clubs and hotel venues in both central and regional areas. Additionally, sessions will be made available at Breakthrough’s head office and online to ensure training is accessible to all.
Breakthrough CEO John Mannion said he welcomed the continued partnership.
“It’s great to see the hospitality industry taking the mental health conversation seriously,” he said.
“Hospitality venues across South Australia are not just places of social connection but also environments that actively support mental wellbeing. We hope more organisations nationwide get involved.”
