The redevelopment of Floreat Surf Life Saving Club in Perth’s City Beach has hit a major roadblock after Construct360, the construction company responsible for the project, was placed into liquidation.

Work on the multi-million-dollar upgrade began just three months ago but came to an abrupt stop in mid-February when the local council Town of Cambridge was informed of the company’s collapse.

“The Town received initial notification from the contractor on Wednesday 12 February and, as the owner of the building, promptly secured the site and restricted access,” the local council said.

“We have requested additional information from the company’s liquidator to clarify the next steps.”

The town said it is now working closely with the Floreat to ensure impacts on its operations are minimised and is seeking to recommence works “as soon as possible”.

Originally scheduled for completion this year, the $2.45 million redevelopment now faces delays as the Town searches for a new contractor.

The project was designed to modernise the club, enhance accessibility, improve training facilities, and expand the space for greater flexibility and functionality.

Designed by long-time City Beach resident Noel Chrystal, a partner at Johnson and Chrystal Architects, the club was built in 1981.  Despite its exposure to a harsh coastal environment, the structure remains in good condition, reflecting its durable design. The roof was replaced in 2016, and the current works aim to upgrade both the interior and exterior, along with essential services.

To assist with costs, the town secured two separate grants of $655,000 from the state government and Lotterywest.

But Floreat Surf Life Saving Club isn’t the only surf club in the midst of searching for a new building contractor. Over on the east coast in Sydney’s south, North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has also faced similar dilemmas where its building contractor also went into liquidation.
