The redevelopment of the North Cronulla Life Saving Club (NCSLSC) in Sydney’s south has been temporarily suspended.
A spokesperson for Sutherland Shire Council told Club Management it was “aware of challenges that have been encountered by North Cronulla Life Saving Club (NCSLSC) in the redevelopment of their clubhouse facilities, with work on this project temporarily suspended”.
“As a major stakeholder in this project, Council continues to liaise closely with club management to ensure we are kept well informed of how these challenges are to be resolved,” the spokesperson said.
“Council recognises the strong value that our local surf lifesaving clubs bring to our community and is committed to working with NCSLSC management to ensure this community asset is completed in a timely and financially responsible manner.”
Lahey Constructions is the building contractor.
Club Management has reached out to both the surf club and Lahey Constructions for comment.
Construction on the surf club, dubbed Project Phoenix, began in February 2022, where a sod-turning ceremony was attended by then prime minister and local MP Scott Morrison.
In its last update, dated November 2023, the club confirmed it was entering stage 6 construction phase, which was slated to be completed by March 2024.
In its original construction program that Lahey Construction project issued in November 2021, the project was expected to be completed in February 2023.
When completed, the redevelopment is expected to incorporate the modernisation of the existing club, alongside a new two-storey extension. There will also be a new upstairs bar-restaurant and downstairs kiosk.
Feros Group, which was awarded the contract to operate the food and beverage offering, has said it is still “fully committed to the project and look forward to it opening sometime in 2024”.
