Constant rain, construction delays and major power upgrades have contributed to the prolonged delay in reopening Five Dock Bowling Club and its accompanying Italian restaurant reopening.
Despite having all hands on deck, the venue in Sydney’s inner west still needed some finishing touches when Club Management visited this week. The summer break is also likely to affect the timing of the opening.
With the refreshed and impressive clubhouse pretty much complete and the two greens now finished, proprietors Domenic Moio and sons will need to wait for various approvals before they re-open the venue to the community, four years after the club shut down.
City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas announced the Moios’ plans for the former Tigers Five Dock in March 2020. Built in the 1930s and surrounded on three sides by parkland, Five Dock Bowling Club closed in October 2018 after Tigers’ then-operator, Balmain Leagues Club, shut its doors.
The refurbished bowlo will not operate as a traditional bowling club, will be poker-machine free and will be open to the public as a restaurant and community hub. One of the new synthetic greens will remain for competition play, while the other will be offered up for barefoot bowls.
The Moios, operators of Pellegrini’s Italian and the originators of the 1-metre-long pizza, among other stunts, remain tight-lipped about launch plans.
“We have lots in store and can’t wait to open our doors and share the new venue with everyone,” the Moios told Club Management.
The Bistro will trade during lunch hours and the restaurant will open evenings, while the bar will operate throughout the day. The exact hours will be released, pending staff numbers, just before opening.
Hope there will be Friday raffles.

When will Five Dock Bowling Club be open for Monday to Friday lunches
Have you been able to find out what is happening to the Bowling Club component of this venue? I’ve enquired at City of Canada Bay and had no response. I hope the Council has not handed over the management of the Bowls side of things to the restaurant operators? Also, they seem to have changed the venue name (on their website/Facebook/Instagram) to The Home Grounds. Everyone’s very confused.
