Renowned executive chef Helmut Gundendorfer has farewelled Bankstown Sports after 22 years in the kitchen of the club. The southwestern Sydney club has become a premium, award-winning dining destination over Gundendorfer’s two decades at the venue.
Such is his influence at the club, they even named a venue after Gundendorfer, Helmut’s Haus, with a menu inspired by the chef’s native Bavarian cuisine which opened at Bankstown Sports in 2020.
Gundendorfer is moving on “to chase his dreams”, and spend more time with family.
“Helmut has had an impressive 22 years as the executive Chef of Bankstown Sports Group and in that time, he has shown passion and commitment to providing a world-class experience in our restaurants,” said interim club CEO Michael Clancy.
“We are excited for Helmut as he moves to this new chapter in his life and wish him nothing but the best in the future. I personally thank him for all his hard work over the years and commend him on his achievements during his career.”
Introducing a wide variety of cuisines and styles to the club group, Gundendorfer has overseen many of the club’s menus, including a barbecue and smoked meats option at The Acres in Greenacre, plus Basement Brewhouse and a rejuvenated Greenfield Station Bistro, both at Bankstown.
“I still remember the day when he first walked in the doors, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him throughout his career,” said former CEO Mark Condi who also recently stepped away from the club after 30 years. “He is also one of the few I can label as a true mate.”
No announcement has yet been made on his replacement.
Very sorry to hear Chef Helmut has left the club. We have been traveling from Wollongong at least twice a week to enjoy his food. We wish him the best for the future.
The last time we were at the Bankstown club the dinner at the greenfield station was very average. Will not be in a hurry go there again.
Very dissatisfied.
Oh, no what a shame we loved the Goulash at Helmut Haus. We were looking forward to coming in tonight.
